there’s no place like hOMe

by Jenilyn Gilbert

meditation on mountainI’ve been practicing meditation on and off for thirty seven years. I started my practice at six (or whatever age I was when I was playing with my Wizard of Oz dolls, because they came with me to my first lesson).

My parents brought me to a meditation center where a nice lady gave me a mantra to practice. The mantra I was given was the classic sound “Om” and I was to say it as many times as my age, so six times. When I got home, I recall chanting on my swing in the backyard and saying “Om” out loud and losing count as I enjoyed the vibration of the sound in my chest. […]

Late Bloomers

by Jenilyn Gilbert

holding_seedlingSeems I live in the most fertile house in history.  Everything about this house is fertile and that’s partly why this house was so appealing to buy.   Eight children and two parents lived here before we bought it last summer.  Later I learned that the mother was expecting her ninth baby.

The neighbors joke, “Don’t drink the water in that house!” I was drinking water by the gallons, are you kidding me?  Although normally I’m pretty conscious of drinking only filtered water, I started drinking straight from the tap as well as offering it to all of my fertility clients. […]

Is Infertility Awareness Week for Me, Too? (Infertility Awareness Week – 4/21 – 4/27/2013)

infertility weekThe 28 year old woman who is told ‘adoption is your only option’; the mother who wants to add another child to her family but feels guilty that others don’t have their first child yet; the 42-year-old woman who questions whether the diagnosis of infertility even applies to her, are all women who belong to this club of wanting to be mothers, but within this reluctant membership, there are subcultures, divided by age and diagnosis.  In an already isolating experience, is it healthy to divide ourselves further?   […]

Love That Rings True

by Jenilyn Gilbert

I met my husband swing dancing in Grant Park in downtown Chicago when I was 38 years old.  We dated for a couple of years and I was one month into my fortieth year when I walked down the aisle. wedding rings

I recall the time before I met him; all the first dates, sadness over not having a life partner and feeling so left out and so behind my peers.  I attended so many wedding showers and weddings that I never thought my turn would come.  When I attended a friend’s second wedding, I thought ‘that’s it, this will never be me, now they’re starting to run two circles around me.  I will never get married.’  Now that I’m two years into my marriage I just want to be pregnant.  […]

Energy Boosters for the New Year

by Jenilyn Gilbert

Are you feeling exhausted, grumpy or spacey lately?  Do you lack energy?  As midlife mothers and mothers to be, our energy levels can sometimes be compromised.  As our hormones shift so does our energy. Some of us need to slow down and others need to speed things up.  Perhaps you need more hours of sleep, or you may find yourself feeling tired around 3 or 4 PM (in the afternoon) or maybe you don’t have the same overall zest you used to have.  […]

The Midlife Biological Clock

by Jenilyn Gilbert

Dear Reader: Please meet our newest regular contributor, Jenilyn Gilbert – a fertility coach, certified yoga instructor, and adoption counselor.

As a fertility coach and someone personally trying to conceive in her 40’s, I have found that keeping an open mind and open heart around how your child comes to you can be quite the challenge when there are so many different ways to become a mother.  Perhaps you’ve been trying naturally to conceive and you’re researching fertility doctors now, or you’ve done many IVF’s and the doctor is suggesting third party reproduction, or you’ve exhausted your biological efforts and are moving on to adoption.
